LEARN ABOUT SPARK PLUGS (P.1)

25/03/2020

What are drying spark plugs?

Drying spark plugs are used for DIESEL engines, spark plugs help start the car preferably in cold weather conditions.

Diesel engines work by compressing the fuel mixture under such great pressure that it spontaneously ignites. By not using sparks, diesel engines need a large compression ratio to push the temperature up. This ratio sometimes reaches 20:1 while in an average gasoline engine it only needs 9.5:1.

When it is cold, especially in the North in winter, diesel engines will be more difficult to explode than usual due to the following reasons:

- The area of the combustion chamber is large, giving off a lot of heat, so the temperature of the air at the end of the compression period is significantly lost

- Low compression ratio to unified combustion chamber

- Low spray oil pressure

Common types of drying spark plugs

– The first form is the most common drying spark plug, arranged separately for each cylinder.

– The second form is the intake air drying form, arranged in the fuel path.

For the first form, the drying system works to support the start of the engine using spark plugs. As for the second form - the one that uses a pre-intake air dryer - after the engine has exploded, this part remains active for a certain period of time (the engine temperature reaches the required level) to ensure that the engine does not stall.

How to choose the right spark plugs?

Users need to consider the following basic specifications when choosing drying spark plugs:

Engine type: Spark plugs used for turbo engines will be different from those used for non-turbo engines and according to the manufacturer's recommendation is not to use these 2 types together. The distinction is that the type used for turbo engines usually has a "P" on the parameter range.

Voltage type: There are 2 main types of voltage, one using 12V voltage, this type is usually used for residential cars. One uses a 24V voltage for trucks. Besides, there are some types that use 5.6V or 9V for ultra-fast drying to make the car easier to start.

Size: Just like ignition spark plugs, drying spark plugs also have different sizes depending on the type of engine and each manufacturer.

Hot spark plugs, cold spark plugs: Each type of engine uses drying spark plugs with suitable capacity to heat the combustion chamber and is heat resistant when operating at the highest power mode. Therefore, if you use it incorrectly, it will not bring efficiency and also reduce the life of spark plugs.
